An excellent year for Rothley Tennis Club

Rothley Ivanhoe Tennis Club are capitalising on an excellent year of results for the 2009 season which has also seen an exciting addition to the club - a new gazebo - erected earlier in the year. This has been appreciated by many spectators who have certainly seen some first class tennis.

In the Leicestershire leagues the club achieved fantastic results.

Of the five men’s teams the 3 rd team were promoted and all other teams held their league positions with the first team consolidating their place in the Premier League by finishing 2 nd.

All ladies teams maintained their division position and a promising start was made by the newly formed fifth team.

The mixed teams also achieved exceptional results with the first team being promoted to division one after winning all five games and the other three teams coming 2 nd in their divisions.

The club’s winning streak continued with the Ladies Vets which saw three couples finishing runners up in their groups.

Rothley’s head coach Tom Kisiel hit the top, winning the Leicestershire County Championships men’s singles title for the second year in a row. Also worth mentioning is Ryan Punia who reached the semi finals.

Further success in the County Championships for Rothley was achieved with Tom Lewis and Sophie Matthews winning the Handicapped Mixed Doubles and Tom Lewis, this time partnered with Laura Morley, reaching the semi finals of the Mixed Doubles event.

Tom Kisiel also had back to back wins in Rothley’s own club championship men’s singles event. Other club champions are as follows:

Ladies Singles - Rosemary Perkins

Men’s Doubles - Andy Davies and James Lloyd

Ladies Doubles - Ronnie Porte and Julia Bayley

Mixed Doubles = Tom Lewis and Elsie Randall

Mixed Vets - John Moore and Anne Mumford

Sophie Matthews is Club Champion (posted 27/2/09)

Rothley Ivanhoe Tennis Club has a new ladies club champion. Sophie Matthews has won her first club title at the age of just 13. The final was a tense affair with Sophie winning the first set 6-0, but a strong comeback by her opponent Alison Thompson in the second set, saw the score tied at 3-3. Sophie then used some aggressive baseline play to push ahead and win the second set 6-3. Just a few minutes later she was back in action in the ladies doubles final with Jodie Parker but tough opponents edged them out. A great performance and a glimpse of what is to come from this talented junior.

GSM Dudley Trip (posted 27/2/09)

GSM Leisure took seven of its Mini Red players to Dudley on December 30th to compete in a David Lloyd One-Day Tennis Tournament. Louis Green, James Gossage, Sam Godrich, Riley Cliff, Daniel Maud, Matthew Howse and Stephanie Addison all arrived at the pick up point early (7.45am) and together with Tom Lewis and Tom Kisiel set off for the West Midlands.

In the girls event Stephanie Addison shone, beating all of the other girls, finishing first and taking home the trophy! The Boys event was split into three groups with winners going through to semi finals and one lucky loser also going through. James Gossage came top in group ‘Federer’, with Sam Godrich finishing 3rd and Matt Howse 4th. In group ‘Murray’ Daniel Maud narrowly missed out despite playing some brilliant tennis finishing 2nd in his group. In group ‘Nadal’ Louis Green won the group with Riley Cliff finishing second and claiming the lucky losers spot. In the semi finals Louis Green and Riley had a tough match, with Louis eventually emerging the winner 10-7. James Gossage coolly went about winning his semi 10-4. The final was always going to be close with both boys playing some great tennis on the way there and the match didn’t disappoint. The first point saw an 87 stroke rally and the rest of the match continued in this form. James Gossage finally managed to get a lead and hold on to win 10-7 and take home the title. A great effort from all of our players both on and off court.
